| Day 1 - Welcome to Mongolia - Ulaanbaatar. |
Arrival in Ulaanbaatar and transfer to our hotel. Dependant on our time of arrival, we may have a short city sight-seeing tour. Evening we have a welcome dinner and stay overnight in a 4* hotel.
| Day 2 - Ulaanbaatar - Elsin Tasarhai. | We board the jeeps in the morning for the first time and travel off road westerly across the dunes. We traverse the wild valleys and local villages on the shoulder ofthe Gobi desert. Arriving at our camp early evening we stay in traditional guest tents called Gers.
| Day 3 - Kharkhorin - Tsenher hot springs. |
Built by Genghis Khan around 800 years ago, Kharkhorin was famed throughout Asia as the capital of the Mongol Empire. Within the walls of this spectacular city kings were chosen, laws made and the fate of the next city to be conquered were determined. We visit the ruins of the old city, the Erden Zuu monastery and other historical monuments in the area. After lunch, we will continue westerly to the region the Mongolians call the "paradise of the horse herders" for its lush grasses and open vast valleys. Next we convoy through thick pine forests to the Tsenher hot springs where water flows out of the ground at 82 degrees and also where we can enjoy a relaxing soak. Overnight is spent in our ger camp.
| Day 4 - Hiking around Tsenher. |
Early start and we drive to the trailhead to begin our hike. We are treated to a enchanting walk upstream where we hop from one stone to another till we reach the focal point at the top for an eagle eye view of the surrounding topography. In this particular part of Arkhangai the wild flowers are plentiful and its likely we will see the local cutting hay for winter fodder for the cattle and horses. We then head back the way we came and eat at the ger camp and retire for the next days adventure.
In our SUV's we head out early morning and start to pass through Tsetserleg which is the provincial capital, we stop for a short while and visit its local thriving market. Continuing west we arrive at Taikhar Chuluu – a huge rock which is connected to local mythology. The last stop of our day will be at a wonderful observation point where we can view the Chuluut Canyon and the holy "100 branch tree" which has grown nearby for hundreds of years. Finally we arrive at Khorgo Canyon and overnight in a ger camp.
| Day 6 - Terhin Tsagaan Nuur. |
We spend this day hiking or on horseback riding from the top of the Khorgo Canyon through fields of basalt studded with pine trees, all the way down till we reach the shores of Terhin Tsagaan Lake. We stay here overnight in a ger camp.
Driving north the convoy is treated to one of the most scenic routes, we cross high mountain passes, vast grasslands and small creeks nestled next to tiny villages. We finish this day next to the picturesque Zuun Lake, a small alpine lake in the mountainous region of Huvsgul. Overnight in a ger camp next to the shore.
| Day 8 - Erhil Lake & Lake Huvsgul. |
As the group heads north, we pass through the town of Murun, the provincial capital of Huvsgul. A short while later we arrive at a ancient burial site featuring Mongolia's mysterious deerstones, memorial stones that represent important leaders and warriors, all are carved with deer motifs. Continuing north we stop for a while and take in the beauty of Huvsgul Lake and its serene surroundings that are abundant with Mongolia's ethnic minorities as well as a refuge for a large variety of wildlife and fauna. This place is renouned for being one of the highlights of any trip to Mongolia, overnight in nearby ger camp.
| Day 9 - Tsaatan & the reindeer people. | One of the most interesting ethnic group in the area of Tsaatan is the reindeer people. They are a small tribe of the Tsaatan consisting of around 40 families that live with their herds of reindeer around the resourceful lake. These graceful animals provide the tribe with all its basic needs like milk, transportation, meat, skins and bones and antlers that are used as tools or hunting utensils. As thee are very few Tsaatan left they are a mobile population so we will walk by foot and horse to find them. Overnight in a ger camp.
| Day 10 - Lake Huvsgul tour & onto Murun. |
Starting the day with a brisk early morning hike around the forest and meadows near the lake. Lake Huvsgul lying around 1650 meters above sea level and surrounded by mountainous terrain as high as 3100 meters the waters are especially clear and pure. We hike through thick pine forests carpeted with flowers and explore the setting of Mongolia's "Blue Pearl". After lunch we drive to Murin and settle in out ger camp.
| Day 11 - Back to Ulaanbaatar - Gorkhi Terelj National Park. |
Taking the first available flight, we return to Ulaanbaatar. Next we greet our driver and guide and embark on a drive of around 1.5 hours to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park. The park features uniqure rock formations, scenic valleys, winding rivers and restful groves of trees. Many nomads live in the park itself where they find great grazing for their livestock. Overnight in a ger camp in the park.
| Day 12 - Horseback trek in the stunning Gorkhi. | An easy laid back horse trek ride across the mountains to the Terelj River starts our morning. After lunch we go for a stroll through the more than relaxing park's meadows before heading back to Ulaanbaater. In the evening we enjoy a farewell dinner followed by a trip to the top of Zaisan Hill to see the city at night below. Overnight stay in a 4* hotel.
| Day 13 - Departure day - Its hard to say goodbye. | After breakfast the group is transferred to the airport for all international flights.
