| Day 1 - The battleground of Didgori. |
For the first time on this journey we board the Toyota Land Cruisers after a safety briefing early in the morning. We start with a visit to the historically enriched church Sveti' Tzchoveli. Through a thick forest we arrive at the battlefield of Did-Gori which was fought between the armies of the Kingdom of Georgia and the crumbling Great Seljuk Empire. We then continue to the ridges and local neighborhoods and return to Tbilisi. In the evening we will celebrate with dinner at a local restaurant in the town and were treated to a folklore dance to get us into the spirit of Georgia.
| Day 2 - The low Caucasus - Volcanic areas. |
Convoy to the lower Caucasus Mountains through local villages of Armenian Descent. We stop to rest, stretch our legs and have lunch at Lake Tsalka this is where we get our second taste of great Georgian delicacies like Khachapuri, lubiani and delicious homemade beverages. At the famous Georgian Lake Tabachkuri we take an inspiring walk taking in the air and views. Across towering volcanic peaks on one side and grazing land of Azerbaijan on the other we tour the hillsides. Back to the comfort of our hotel in a skiing town of Bakuriani.
| Day 3 - Vardzia "the cave city". |
Ahal-Khalaki is our first stop today, through back country and the infamous Dry Bones road which boasts a huge volcanic plateau. Stop off at the infamous cave city Vardzia to walk and explore this eerie and historic place. After lunch back to the jeeps and on to the next destination Borjomi. The second part of the day we travel alongside the Mtkvari river to a refreshing stop in the natural spring town of Borjomi then back to the hotel in Bakuriani to rest and eat well for the next days adventures.
| Day 4 - Circling the Bakuriani. |
A slightly challenging climb up the Caucasus Mountains starts our day. Then downhill to the heart of local lumberjack harvest, with luck we’ll meet the regions logging locals which is usually an immediate invite for us to join them for a local tipple. Emerging from the forest we scale green pastures arriving at a small village to sample the best in Georgian food for a traditional lunch. After a walk in the woods and villages time to head along the tributaries and bathe in a pool of natural warm water. Back to the hotel in Bakuriani to talk of the days experiences and of course more stunning food and drink.
| Day 5 - From the low Caucasus to the high. |
Early start and go to sample the fresh air of the River Mtkvari. Following a curvaceous track of the river feel the bumps and layers of some quality off-road. Time for lunch and to take in the views and marvel at the statue of Stalin. Eastward bound we use the same paths the Russian army used during the war 2000m above sea level.Hotel is the final stop for a well deserved pampering in Bakuriani.
| Day 6 - The beautiful Khazbegi region. |
Today we do a circle tour of the Khazbegi region. These hills and plains are known as one of the most scenic places in the world and its clear to see why once you sample its natural beauty. Last stop of the day consists of taking a tour to the Freindship Monument and learning of its erection before we head back to the hotel for the final night.
Today we say goodbye to the Caucasus. Driving back through the military made paths southbound we stop at Anna Nuri church located next to Jinvali Lake, We enter and marvel at the stunning architechture. After returning the SUV's in the capital we eat lunch at the city gates and use the remaining hours prior to departure to tour the city and explore its many cathedrals , museums and monuments.We bebrief and are then transfered to the airport.
